RS1DB0230
RS1DB0230 Wt. .390 gms. Mexico. 4 Reales, No Date-M-L (Mexico City). Carlos & Joanna, 1516-1556. Probably late coinage (1542-1555); small central design. Crowned arms of Castille and Leon. Reverse: Crowned pillars over waves, motto between; value below. Weight of .390 gms shows a slight deviance from minted weight. Shows some wear as it is a shipwreck coin but still of very good quality. Assayer: Luis Rodriguez. The care obviously taken in the minting of these coins is most impressive. Hammered sheets of silver were used from which the coin blanks were cut. The coins were then hand struck by placing the blanks between the dies and striking it with a hammer. This produced, round, fully struck examples. Recovered by Deep Blue Marine, Inc. Certificate of Authenticity provided with purchase.
